Cleansing the Temple

19:45 Then ³  Jesus ⁴  entered the temple courts ⁵  and began to drive out those who were selling things there, ⁶

[2:19]  ¹ tn The term συμβάλλουσα (sumballousa) suggests more than remembering. She is trying to put things together here (Josephus, Ant. 2.5.3 [2.72]). The words “what they might mean” have been supplied in the translation to make this clear. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[4:28]  ² tn The words “the people” are not in the Greek text but have been supplied.

[19:45]  ³ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[19:45]  ⁴ tn Grk “he.”

[19:45]  ⁵ tn Grk “the temple” (also in v. 47).

[19:45]  sn The merchants (those who were selling things there) would have been located in the Court of the Gentiles.

John (2:13-16) records a cleansing of the temple at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.
